The media contact gap: what 5,000+ reporter profiles reveal about reaching the press in 2026

The hardest part of earned media is not writing the pitch. It is knowing which reporter to send it to, and being able to reach them at all. To put real numbers on that, we built a living media archive: a continuously growing map of reporters, the outlets they write for, and the stories they actually publish. Here is what it shows so far.

What the archive holds

The contact gap

The striking finding: only about one in eight reporters, roughly 13 percent, publishes a contact you can actually find from their public work. The other seven in eight are reachable, but not through a stale spreadsheet. The details sit scattered across author pages, mastheads and the open social web, and they go out of date the moment someone changes beat or outlet.

This is why a contact export fails. By the time you buy it, a large share of it is already wrong, and it never told you who the right reporter was in the first place.

Asia is under-mapped, and that is the opening

More than 1,500 of the reporters in the archive work across Asian markets, among them Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Hong Kong and India. These are exactly the desks that global databases cover thinnest, and where coverage in the local language, not a translation, is what lands.

Why this matters for AI visibility

The sources AI engines cite when a buyer asks "who is the best" are, overwhelmingly, these same outlets and reporters. Getting the right journalist to cover you is no longer only about the clipping. It is how you become the answer that ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity give. The contact gap is now an AI-visibility gap.

What works instead

Three things, in order. Match a story to reporters by what they genuinely write about. Reach each one through the legitimate channels that actually exist for them. Then track not just the coverage, but how that coverage is cited back in AI answers, so you know whether you became the answer or someone else did.

Methodology: figures are drawn from the Cites X media archive as of October 2026, a continuously growing dataset of reporters and their published work across global outlets. Numbers are rounded and will change as the archive grows.
